The European Health Insurance Card
The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is a free card that you can receive from your health insurance provider. The card gives you access to urgent medical care during a temporary stay in one of the EEA countries. Please note, the EHIC:
- is not an alternative for travel insurance
- does not cover costs if you travel to receive medical treatment
- does not guarantee free care, since health care systems are different in every country
- is individual
- Is limited to urgent and unforeseen medical care
Please note: if you move to another country for a longer period of time, you cannot use the European Health Insurance Card, but you must register with an S1 form to get medical care in your new country of residence.
